Check the link between your course and a skills assessment
A course title does not establish suitability for a migration skills assessment. Start with the occupation and the authority’s assessment pathway, then check the exact qualification, subjects, accreditation period and any registration or experience requirements. CRICOS registration alone does not answer that question.

Key facts
| Occupation and authority | Identify the nominated occupation and the authority responsible for assessing it. |
|---|---|
| Qualification detail | Check award level, major, relevant subjects, institution and any program-specific recognition. |
| Additional requirements | Experience, professional registration, English and evidence requirements vary by authority and pathway. |
| Purpose and timing | Check the assessment category needed for the visa under consideration and when the outcome must be available. |
Who this is relevant to
For students comparing courses and graduates considering an assessment. The same qualification can have different implications across occupations or assessment categories.
Requirements
Check the authority’s current rules directly. For example, ACS’s Post Australian Study pathway adds relevant experience or an ACS Professional Year to qualifying Australian study, while ANMAC’s Modified pathway starts from current Australia or New Zealand registration. These examples show why one generic work-experience rule is unsafe.
Process
- Identify the occupation from the actual professional work you intend to perform.
- Find the relevant authority and assessment category.
- Check the specific course, subjects and recognition dates, then identify additional evidence or experience.
- Recheck the pathway when applying, especially if your study or employment circumstances have changed.
Evidence
Keep detailed transcripts, award and completion documents, course outlines and any relevant accreditation or registration evidence. Work evidence is needed where the selected pathway or specialty requires it; it is not a universal substitute for qualification or registration requirements.
Common issues
A positive assessment is not a visa grant, professional licence or job offer. An accredited course may simplify one recognition step while leaving other requirements. A provider or agent cannot guarantee an assessment result based only on the course you choose.
