Australian permanent residency pathways

A useful migration plan identifies the next application you can lawfully make, the evidence it needs and the conditions you would have to meet afterwards. Temporary study, graduate work and employer sponsorship are separate stages; none reserves a permanent visa place.

Key facts

Illustrative routes, each subject to separate criteria
Points-tested routeOccupation and assessment → EOI and any nomination → invitation → visa application.
Employer routeA qualifying employer nomination may support a temporary or permanent application; a temporary visa is not always a required first step.
Graduate planningEligible study may support a 485 application; any later skilled or sponsored visa has its own criteria.
Regional provisional route491 or 494 may support a later 191 application if its current requirements are met.

Who this is relevant to

For people comparing a near-term lawful-stay option with a longer-term skilled or employer-supported objective.

Requirements

Assess the current visa and expiry, application restrictions, occupation, assessment, English, employment and family circumstances. Consider whether the proposed sequence depends on a future nomination, job, invitation or reform that is outside your control.

Process

  • Confirm current status and any immediate application deadline.
  • Identify the requirements and evidence for the next realistic application.
  • Compare alternatives if an invitation, nomination or job is unavailable.
  • Reassess before each later application instead of assuming that an earlier approval fixes future rules.

Evidence

Use a timeline of visas, travel, study, qualifications and employment. Separate evidence already available from future events that remain uncertain.

Common issues

Enrolling in another course or submitting an EOI does not itself extend a visa. The 2 October Student application rules also affect some onshore changes of status. Check those restrictions before committing to fees or relying on a further Student visa.
