Student visa applications and family members
The 2 October rules affect who can apply for and be granted a Student or Student Guardian visa in Australia, and the inclusion of family members in Student visa applications. Exemptions and transitional arrangements matter. A current visa is not automatically cancelled by the reform, and a pre-change application is not treated as a new application solely because it is decided later.
Changing an education provider
The Department of Education temporarily extended the transfer-restriction period for non-school overseas students from six to twelve months of the principal course. The extension applies until 30 June 2027, subject to the National Code exceptions. Check these rules before requesting a release or committing to a new provider.
Evidence requirements are separate from visa eligibility
The September Evidence Level update took effect on 30 September 2026. These settings guide documentary evidence requirements; they do not create visa eligibility or a promise of priority processing. Check the official Document Checklist Tool for the provider and country relevant to your application.
Announcements and rules already in force
As at this review, Study Australia describes the proposed Student visa Transfer stream and further Temporary Graduate family-member restrictions as reforms still being developed. This website does not present those proposals as requirements already operating. Check for commencement and application provisions before relying on an announcement.
