Skills assessment for Australian migration
A migration skills assessment checks your suitability for a nominated occupation against an authorised assessing body’s criteria. First confirm the visa purpose and the correct authority: the assessment you need can differ between a graduate, points-tested or employer-sponsored pathway.

Key facts
| Occupation and authority | Confirm the exact occupation and designated assessing authority for the visa purpose |
|---|---|
| Assessment type | A qualification-only or provisional outcome may serve a different purpose from a full migration assessment |
| Employment and points | An assessed occupation does not establish that every period of employment can earn visa points |
| Next decision | Home Affairs decides the visa; state or territory nomination has its own criteria |
Who this is relevant to
People choosing an occupation, preparing an Expression of Interest or checking whether an existing assessment suits a new visa pathway.
Requirements
Use the authority’s pathway checklist alongside the relevant visa requirements. Qualification level, subject content, duties, registration and work history can matter in different combinations. There is no universal assessment checklist or experience threshold for every occupation.
Process
- Confirm the visa stream and nominated occupation before paying an assessment fee.
- Read the matching authority’s current criteria and list the evidence you already have and still need.
- Check the outcome letter’s occupation, assessment purpose, dates and any employment findings.
- Use only supportable assessment, English and employment information in your EOI and visa application.
Evidence
Prepare identity, qualification and employment records according to the chosen checklist. Keep names, dates and duties consistent across the application and supporting documents; arrange translations and direct third-party verification where required.
Common issues
Starting or saving an EOI is possible while results are being obtained. Before relying on an assessment for an invitation or visa, check the applicable timing and validity rules. A positive result does not guarantee an invitation or permission to practise a regulated occupation.
