The ANMAC skills assessment, explained
ANMAC assesses nursing, midwifery and eligible direct care occupations for migration. It does not register nurses or midwives to practise in Australia: that process sits with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra.

Key facts
| Modified assessment | Current nursing or midwifery registration in Australia or New Zealand |
|---|---|
| Full assessment | Eligible applicants with approved overseas registration and qualifications |
| Direct care assessment | A separate route supporting the relevant aged care or designated area labour agreement |
| Work experience | Evidence may be needed for a specific occupation code or to assess employment for migration purposes |
Who this is relevant to
Nurses, midwives and direct care workers checking migration assessment requirements and the correct application route.
Requirements
Start with ANMAC’s eligibility questions. Registration status and country, qualification, intended occupation and assessment purpose affect the route. A Full assessment is not an automatic alternative for every overseas-qualified nurse. Check ANMAC English requirements and the visa’s English requirements separately.
Process
- Confirm whether the visa purpose requires an ANMAC assessment.
- Select the current pathway and check its eligibility and occupation requirements.
- Prepare qualifications, registration and any required employment references or English evidence.
- Arrange direct regulator verification where required, then check the code and employment recorded in the outcome.
Evidence
Employment used to support a nursing specialisation should describe the actual clinical work. ANMAC may verify records with employers and education providers; overseas regulator documents must be supplied through the prescribed direct channel.
Common issues
As checked on 22 October 2026, ANMAC still lists Modified, Full and Direct care assessments. A new portal, assessment names and fees are announced for later in 2026; ANMAC says to continue the current process until launch advice. Do not treat the proposed names as already active.
