Who this is relevant to
The role involves installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of electrical equipment, wiring and controls. Compare Electrician (Special Class), electrical engineering and other trades where your duties differ. Check licensing in the state or territory where you intend to work.
Requirements
Use TRA’s program guidance and Pathfinder before applying; the general documentary MSA program excludes Electrician (General). Under relevant offshore pathways, successful assessment can produce an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR). Full licensing may then require a provisional licence, Australian context gap training and supervised employment, subject to the regulator’s rules.
Process
- Confirm the trade and the assessment program required for your visa and circumstances.
- Prepare qualification, apprenticeship and verifiable employment evidence under the selected program.
- Use a TRA-approved assessment provider where that program requires one.
- Plan the state or territory licensing steps, including any gap training and supervised work, separately from the visa application.
Common issues
An OTSR is not a full electrical licence. A worker’s licence also does not automatically permit electrical contracting. Check the relevant regulator’s licence categories and conditions before planning independent work or operating a contracting business.
