University or VET: which course fits the work you want to do?

Higher education and vocational education and training offer different learning approaches, with overlap in providers and qualification types. Compare the actual course, the skills it develops and any professional entry requirements. A university can deliver VET, and a qualification’s title or AQF level does not by itself identify its sector.

Key facts

Compare the actual offering
Learning approachHigher education commonly develops disciplinary theory and analysis; VET emphasises practical occupational competencies. Check how the specific course is taught and assessed.
Provider typeUniversities, non-university higher education providers, TAFEs and private RTOs have different registrations; some deliver both sectors.
Qualification and durationCheck the exact award, AQF level, course length and credit available rather than assuming from a sector label.
Career entrySome occupations require a particular accredited qualification, registration or licence; another course in the same field may not qualify.
ProgressionCredit or articulation into another course depends on the receiving provider’s written decision.

Who this is relevant to

For students choosing between practical skills training, a degree or a staged route to further study. Compare your preferred learning style and the entry conditions of the target occupation.

Requirements

Verify the provider’s higher education or VET registration and the exact CRICOS offering if studying on a Student visa. A higher AQF level is not a promise of skills assessment recognition, employment or a further onshore visa.

Process

  • Identify the skills and professional entry requirements for your target work.
  • Compare course outlines, assessments, facilities and required practical learning.
  • Confirm award, duration, total costs and any credit agreement with the provider.
  • Check any Student visa effect before changing sector, qualification level or provider.

Evidence

Use the course handbook, AQF qualification information, TEQSA or training.gov.au registration and CRICOS details. Ask for proposed credit or articulation arrangements in writing, including any conditions.

Common issues

Do not assume VET is always shorter, cheaper or easier, or that a degree always meets the same occupational goal. Under the October 2026 onshore course-progression exemption, a completed higher education course must lead to another higher education course with a higher education provider; moving to VET is not made eligible simply by a higher AQF number.
