ANZSCO codes for engineers, explained
An ANZSCO occupation identifies the engineering work being assessed and the migration occupation you intend to nominate. It is different from an Engineers Australia occupational category, which identifies the level and competency framework used for assessment.

Who this is relevant to
Applicants choosing a code before an assessment, particularly those with broad degree titles or mixed technical and management duties.
Requirements
Read the official occupation description and tasks alongside the assessing authority’s guidance. Category competency elements are not rewritten for every engineering occupation code. The occupation still needs to match the knowledge and application demonstrated in the assessment.
Process
- List the substance of your work: technical problems, decisions, deliverables and responsibility.
- Compare possible occupations with your academic preparation and the dominant duties of the relevant role.
- Check who assesses that occupation; a role called “engineer” can fall outside Engineers Australia.
- Check the chosen occupation separately for the intended visa and nomination pathway.
Evidence
Use transcripts, course details and genuine role or project records to explain the match. A managerial title alone does not establish Engineering Manager responsibilities, and a translation of a job title may hide the actual technical work.
Common issues
An occupation code cannot turn unrelated duties into relevant experience. Equally, holding a positive assessment does not mean the occupation is eligible for every visa or that a state is currently inviting it.
