Who this is relevant to
This occupation is relevant when your role directs engineering strategy, resources, standards and delivery across an organisation or division. Leading a project or supervising a small technical team does not, by itself, establish the level of management expected by an assessing authority.
Requirements
The two bodies apply their own assessment criteria. IML examines senior strategic responsibility, organisational structure, reporting lines and relevant experience. Engineers Australia’s Engineering Manager pathway uses a competency demonstration report and includes a mandatory relevant skilled employment assessment. Review the selected body’s current criteria before preparing the application.
Process
- Describe the scope of the engineering function, your delegated authority and who reported to you.
- Compare the current Engineers Australia and IML criteria against your qualifications and employment history.
- Prepare verifiable employment records, organisational charts and examples of decisions for which you were responsible.
- Check the intended visa stream and any nomination requirements separately from the assessment.
Common issues
A managerial job title can conceal work that remains mainly technical, project-based or within ICT management. Explain your real responsibilities accurately; do not use Engineering Manager merely because it appears more senior than an engineering occupation.
