The Genuine Student requirement: explain your study choice with evidence
The Genuine Student requirement asks whether study is your primary reason for applying for a Student visa. A possible future intention to apply for permanent residence does not itself count against you. Your answers should explain your actual circumstances and course choice, supported by evidence.

Who this is relevant to
GS applies to Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. Previous Student visa holders and people applying in Australia from another visa may face an additional question.
Requirements
Home Affairs prefers answers in the online form over a separate GS statement. Responses must be in English and no longer than 150 words each. Attach supporting evidence to ImmiAccount.
Process
- Read the actual questions before drafting.
- Collect records supporting the facts you intend to explain.
- Check names, dates and study history are consistent across the form and documents.
Evidence
Useful records include transcripts, course research, employment evidence and explanations of prior study changes or gaps. Evidence carries more weight than unsupported claims.
Common issues
A generic success story, purchased statement or unsupported career promise will not explain your individual circumstances. Be accurate about your intentions and history. GS does not replace the other visa criteria or guarantee a later migration outcome.
