Career Episodes, explained

A Career Episode explains how you personally applied engineering knowledge to a real project or piece of work. It should make your technical contribution understandable to an assessor, including the decisions you made and the evidence supporting them.

Who this is relevant to

Applicants who must prepare their own Career Episodes for a CDR.

Requirements

Engineers Australia requires three Career Episodes. Academic projects can be suitable where they demonstrate your own engineering work; the guide asks for academic supervisor and subject details. Number the paragraphs so the Summary Statement can identify the supporting evidence precisely.

Process

  • Select projects with enough genuine technical detail to explain your decisions.
  • Set out the project objective and your responsibility briefly.
  • Explain the engineering investigation and why you used the chosen methods, then the outcome and learning.
  • Check each competency claim against the episode and its supporting records.

Evidence

Use relevant calculations, designs, diagrams or data to support the account. Identify sources and distinguish your work from team or published material. An employment-based episode also needs an employer reference under the migration checklist.

Common issues

Write the account yourself. Purchased text, copied examples and generated narratives are unsuitable substitutes for your own account. Describe what you actually did; avoid filling space with company history or claiming the whole team’s achievements as your own.
