Employer sponsorship for engineers
Engineers with an Australian job opportunity may consider temporary 482, permanent 186 or regional 494 options. The starting point is the actual engineering work and the employer’s position, followed by the visa stream; a job title or engineering degree alone does not establish eligibility.

Key facts
| Occupation match | Match the role’s duties and skill level to the correct occupation and stream-specific list or rules. |
|---|---|
| Employer route | Check SBS for standard 482/494 arrangements, an applicable labour agreement, or the separate 186 nomination framework. |
| Skills assessment | Certain 482 applicants require assessment. 186 Direct Entry and standard 494 generally require suitable assessment, subject to exemptions or recognised arrangements. |
| Classification | Home Affairs uses ANZSCO 2022 for 482/186 and ANZSCO 2013 for other skilled subclasses, including 494. |
| Registration | Migration assessment and professional registration are different checks; the role and state or territory can matter. |
| Permanent plan | A 482 offer is not a guaranteed 186 outcome; assess the later stream independently. |
Who this is relevant to
Engineers who already have, or are being offered, a role with a specific Australian employer.
Requirements
Prepare a consistent role description, contract, reporting structure and evidence of qualifications and relevant employment. Check the required assessing authority for the nominated occupation, rather than assuming all roles called engineer use the same assessment route. Review salary and any licensing or registration needed to perform the actual work.
Process
- Map the real role to an eligible occupation and suitable visa stream.
- Check the employer’s nomination and sponsorship or agreement requirements.
- Identify the correct assessment, work experience and registration evidence.
- Prepare the employer and worker applications, then assess any permanent pathway separately.
Common issues
A skills assessment does not establish visa eligibility or approve an employer’s role. A role described internally as software engineer, engineering manager or technologist must still be classified from its duties. The correct occupation, authority and evidence can differ from the employer’s preferred title.
