Key facts

At a glance
StatusTemporary work visa linked to a nominated occupation and employer arrangements.
Core SkillsRequires an eligible occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), with any applicable caveats.
Specialist SkillsUses eligible ANZSCO occupation groups and a higher income threshold; it does not use the CSOL in the same way.
Labour AgreementThe employer must have an applicable labour agreement and meet its occupation and concession terms.
Work experienceThe standard Core and Specialist streams require at least one year of relevant work, or its full-time equivalent, in the preceding five years.
EOI and pointsNo SkillSelect EOI, points score or invitation is required for this visa.

Requirements

The applicant must demonstrate the skills for the nominated role and meet the applicable English, health, character and insurance requirements. A formal skills assessment is mandatory for certain applicants, rather than every 482 applicant. The employer must establish a genuine role, applicable labour market testing and salary compliance, including the relevant income threshold and market salary rules.

Process

  • Select the stream and match the actual duties to the correct occupation.
  • Check Standard Business Sponsorship or the relevant labour agreement and prepare the role nomination.
  • Prepare the worker’s visa evidence and coordinate the nomination and visa applications.
  • After grant, monitor visa conditions and reassess any employer change or permanent residence plan.

Common issues

A 482 grant does not guarantee a 186 nomination or permanent residence. Changing employer, occupation or stream can require a new nomination and sometimes a new visa. Check the existing grant conditions before changing work.
