Standard Business Sponsorship, explained
Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) is employer approval used in standard 482 and 494 sponsorship arrangements. It is separate from approval of a particular role nomination and the worker’s visa. Subclass 186 has its own employer nomination framework.

Key facts
| Who applies | The business, rather than the prospective worker. |
|---|---|
| Business eligibility | A lawfully operating business must meet the sponsor criteria and relevant compliance requirements. |
| Overseas businesses | Specific eligible 482 arrangements can cover an overseas business; this is not a blanket rule for every employer visa. |
| Approval scope | SBS alone does not approve a vacancy, occupation or worker. |
| Obligations | Sponsors must keep records, notify required changes and meet applicable pay and compliance obligations. |
| Labour agreements | An applicable work agreement is a distinct sponsor arrangement; do not substitute SBS for agreement terms. |
Who this is relevant to
Employers considering sponsoring a skilled worker for the first time.
Requirements
Prepare evidence of the legal entity, current operations and required employer declarations. Check adverse information and the business’s ability to comply. Confirm the correct entity will sponsor and employ the worker, and monitor the approval expiry date. Sponsorship and nomination costs must be allocated lawfully; certain costs cannot be recovered from the worker.
Process
- Identify the employing legal entity and required sponsorship or agreement route.
- Prepare and lodge the sponsor application if SBS is required.
- Prepare the separate position nomination and coordinate the visa application.
- Maintain records and report events required by the sponsorship rules.
Common issues
SBS is not a universal prerequisite for an ENS nomination. Direct Entry uses the separate 186 nomination framework. Sponsor approval also does not establish that the proposed position, salary or worker meets the visa requirements.
