For an engineer using a points-tested pathway, the occupation, skills assessment, English evidence and points claims need to fit together before an invitation. An EOI records your claims in SkillSelect; it is a separate step from the visa application.

Requirements
Subclass 189, 190 and 491 use SkillSelect. Check the intended stream’s occupation, assessment and other eligibility requirements, then any additional state or territory nomination process. An assessed engineering occupation is not automatically available in every visa or nomination program.
Process
- Confirm the occupation and assessing authority before calculating a migration strategy.
- Build an evidence-backed points estimate, checking employment periods separately from competency evidence.
- Add results to the EOI as received and complete the information needed for the chosen pathway.
- Update relevant changes before invitation and reassess eligibility and evidence when invited.
Evidence
Keep copies of the assessment, English result and documents supporting each points claim. Check the dates that matter under the intended stream rather than assuming an outcome remains usable indefinitely because the authority still recognises it.
Common issues
Do not confuse an EOI with a visa application or an entitlement to remain in Australia. Avoid relying on a general shortage narrative or a previous invitation result as proof that a particular engineering occupation will be invited now.
