English language points, explained
English evidence can affect both basic skilled-visa requirements and a points claim. Competent, Proficient and Superior English are legal categories with different evidence rules. The test type, test date and component results matter; an overall score alone may not establish the category.

Key facts
| Competent English | May satisfy a basic requirement; it is not the same as claiming additional English points. |
|---|---|
| Proficient and Superior English | Higher categories used for English points, subject to the applicable evidence rules. |
| Test regime | Approved tests changed on 7 August 2025; use the table applying to the date the test was taken. |
| Testing format | Home Affairs requires an accepted test at a secure test centre and does not accept wholly online at-home tests. |
Who this is relevant to
Anyone deciding which English test to sit or whether to resit for a higher band.
Requirements
Check the relevant visa category, the approved test and the required result in each component. Older results may remain usable only within the applicable visa-specific time limits. An assessing authority or professional regulator can impose English requirements different from the visa rules.
Process
- Identify the visa English category and any points category you intend to claim.
- Use the official test-date-specific table before booking or interpreting a result.
- Check each component, test format and any retake conditions.
- Confirm validity at the relevant application or invitation stage.
Evidence
Retain the official test report and verifiable result details. A passport-based exemption, where available, is not automatically evidence of a higher points category.
Common issues
Do not use a generic PTE or IELTS conversion chart for every test date, visa and assessing body. A test result accepted by a course provider is not necessarily sufficient for migration or professional registration.
